Letter To Patient

This was a letter of response to a patient who was going through a rough time. I'm happy to report that within several weeks of this letter, she improved dramatically, returning to work and usual lifestyle.

Carol (not her actual name),

No need to apologize for the length of your message. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from you, and receiving your thoughts on your process.

What is most significant to me is the inner shift that has occurred in you. Being more at ease with oneself and one's illness is a key to healing. When you let go of attachment to results in resolving physical limitations, you stop feeding them and they are free to go away on their own. Their energy can simply fade, and your true energy can emerge, all because you stop trying to escape how you feel.

It's difficult for me to see a patient's physical symptoms not resolve (though many of yours have much improved), and I often feel the urge to "fix" the problem-to make the symptoms go away. I'm learning to honor the sacredness of those symptoms and the individual's healing process, more than my desire to see astounding clinical or symptomatic results every time. My desire to alleviate suffering is undiminished, but I'm paying more attention to healing, not just curing. For me the goal is to be healed, and healing is of the mind, not the body. The reason I help people with their physical problems to is to help them to grow, to evolve.

A person can be freed of their physical limitations and still forget how holy they are. They can be "cured," free of symptoms, and still be miserable. I've also had the deep honor of seeing folks like yourself who have not yet been freed of all physical limitations, but are much closer to being healed/made whole. For me this means remembering Who you are, how holy and sacred and divine you are, why you are here, and giving full expression of who you are, even with physical limitations that might be there. It means being the fullness and magnificence of you are to the extent that your vehicle allows. That is the job for all of us. For a person to accept responsibility for extending a blessing into their world, regardless of their limitations, is the starting and ending point of healing. And this is the place towards which you are moving.

And yes, I remain concerned about resolving the imbalances that are back of your physical symptoms. I do not ignore them; I simply see them as lessons and teachers and road signs. So I will indeed bring medicines to work with these patterns, in a spirit of respect and openness to Life's design

It is I who now apologize for the lengthy exposition of some points you touched (pardon the intentional pun). See you tomorrow.

Michael
